231 High Street Brentford was a few doors down from where Celia Cotton's grandmother was born at number 237. Celia is the webmaster of the Brentford High Street Project http://www.bhsproject.co.uk a web site devoted to the history of Brentford High Street. This site is very interesting and worth a long look as there is just loads of information on there. Celia told me that the High Street is unusual in being numbered sequentially. 231 was on the west side of St Pauls Road, whereas 233 onwards was on east side of St Paul's Road. In a 1940 trade directory 231 is listed as a clothiers; Paine Bros. Celia did some research on my behalf using telephone directories. From 1954-1960 K&B are listed as follows:
Kennington & Bourlet, 231 High Street Brentford... EALing 9995 In 1961 the listing is changed as K&B have now moved to Thanet House:- Kennington & Bourlet Ltd, Photog Eqpt Mfrs, Thanet ho High st Brentford... ISLewth 5093 The listing changes again in 1964 to:- Kennington & Bourlet Ltd, High st Yiewsley....W Draytn 4575
Celia went on to say that in 'Brentford & Chiswick Pubs' by Gillian Clegg there is a photo of 231 High Street (luckily it was next door to a pub, The Feathers number 232) showing a building with a first and second floor, central recessed door with shop windows either side - it looks like a clothiers, the photo was taken in the 1960s. Celia's web site contains the following information regarding the occupancy of 231 before K& B were in residence:- Thomas Honeybone, watch & clock maker & jeweler lived here from 1839 - 1871, when he was 68; in 1874 the business was 'Honeybone & Pearce'; and by 1881 Thomas Pearce was running the business; he remained here until 1891; by 1901 Arthur H Bridger, jeweller, was living here, although the 1913 directory names the business as Pearce & Co Ltd, watchmakers and the 1909/10 Valuation returns name the occupiers as 'Pearce & Co (watchmakers)'. At this point the property is described as 'terrace shop & dwelling house, very old and more or less dilapidated'. Frederick Souch, watchmaker, is listed in 1928; by 1933, after nearly 100 years of use for watchmaking, the premises were then used by a clothier.
There is a tantalising glimpse of 231 on Celia's web site. Follow this link and see the property next to The Feathers PH with a clock hanging outside. Use your browser's back button to return to this site.
